Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B spreads by contact with an infected person’s blood, semen, or other body fluid. Hepatitis B can begin as an acute infection but in some people the virus remains in the body, resulting in chronic disease and long term liver problems. There are vaccines to prevent Hepatitis B. The Hepatitis B vaccine is safe and effective and is usually given as 3 shots over a 6 month period. In the United States, an estimated 800,000 to 1.4 million persons have chronic Hepatitis B virus infection.

Hepatitis C is a contagious liver disease that ranges in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness that attacks the liver. It results from infection with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is spread primarily through contact with the blood of an infected person. Hepatitis C can be either “acute” or “chronic.”

An estimated 3- 4 million persons in the United States have chronic Hepatitis C virus infection. Most people do not know they are infected because they don’t look or feel sick. Approximately 75%–85% of people who become infected with Hepatitis C virus develop chronic infection. At Premier Pharmacy we are pleased to offer the new direct-acting oral agents capable of curing hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The side effects of these new drugs are fewer and the duration of treatment is shorter . Our clinical pharmacy team has years of experience in the treatment of and education about Hepatitis. We are keenly aware of health issues that may arise or change while on treatment , so we stay in contact with you to monitor treatment and prevent drug – drug interactions.

Premier Pharmacy dedicates a treatment advocate and a Prior Authorization specialist to you to ensure that your insurance company will provide coverage of your medication through a Prior Authorization or TAR for medication not included on the list of normally covered drugs or specialty drugs such as these. AASLD (American Association For the Study Of Liver Disease) with IDSA (Infectious Diseases Society of America) in collaboration with the International Antiviral Society – USA (IAS-USA) have developed guidelines for treating this unique patient population. In each instance our Clinical Pharmacist monitor HIV antiretroviral drug switches with the HIV practitioner to ensure no drug – drug interactions or interruptions of antiretroviral therapy occur. At Premier Pharmacy we gladly provide ongoing medication management for these patients. Our pharmacy staff is available for 24 hour support.
