Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B spreads by contact with an infected person’s blood, semen, or other body fluid. Hepatitis B can begin as an acute infection but in some people the virus remains in the body, resulting in chronic disease and long term liver problems. There are vaccines to prevent Hepatitis B. The Hepatitis B vaccine is safe and effective and is usually given as 3 shots over a 6 month period. In the United States, an estimated 800,000 to 1.4 million persons have chronic Hepatitis B virus infection.
